Langley Abbey Environment Project and Spains Hall Estate Join aka.land Directory

May 21, 2024

We are extremely pleased to be featuring Langley Abbey Environment Project and Spains Hall Estate in our aka.land natural capital directory.

Both estates have created flagship nature restoration schemes of local and national significance, providing a benchmark to landowners everywhere.

BNG units are available to purchase from both schemes, allowing buyers to make mandatory or voluntary offsets, and just as importantly to contribute meaningfully towards landscape recovery and environmental restoration.

Spains Hall Estate in Essex has been at the forefront of the British biodiversity movement for many years, including by pioneering the reintroduction of beavers after an absence of more than four centuries, as well as supporting an abundance of lower profile but equally vital native florae and faunae. Spains Hall Estate was also one of just five pilot sites chosen by Natural England to support the design of the now mandatory BNG improvement regime for developments in England and Wales.

Langley Abbey, in the Broads National Park (East Anglia), has thoughtfully applied the famous Lawton principles (Making Space for Nature, Prof Sir John Lawton et al, 2010) to create an astonishing programme of environmental recovery, with 250 hectares of priority habitats – from wildflower meadows to lowland fen, and reedbeds to species-rich hedgerows – enhanced and maintained exclusively for wildlife. In a wider landscape of sparse and isolated pockets of nature, Langley Abbey has ‘made space’ for a connected, beautiful and vibrant ecosystem.

We are delighted to partner with them on their journey, the success of which is success for us all.

With special thanks to Archie Ruggles-Brise and Henry Parkinson.
